For this project, I designed a movie poster for a short documentary focused on homelessness in Sacramento, following a social worker on the frontlines of the crisis. This was my first time creating a film poster, as well as working through a full client-based process. Throughout the project, we met with the directors at multiple stages, including an initial briefing, a feedback session on works in progress, and a final presentation. These meetings helped guide my design decisions and allowed me to refine the concept based on direct input from the client.
The poster concept focuses on contrast, highlighting the disconnect between the developed city and the lived realities of homelessness. I created the foreground illustration in Illustrator, depicting a campsite, and paired it with a muted image of the Sacramento skyline in the background. This contrast visually reinforces the subject matter while creating depth within the composition. I chose to keep the typography simple and understated to maintain focus on the imagery and overall message.
This project gave me valuable experience designing for a real client while exploring a new format, and strengthened my ability to translate complex topics into clear, visual storytelling.
